This project is the final assignment I completed for this course. The goal of the project was to design and execute a two-page magazine spread that features an interview with a Chicago-based Latinx artist.
My first step was reading the interview and understanding the artist and his work. This helped me to create a design that would capture the tone of the artist and his work. I originally wanted to make the headline look like a mural itself, but that did not fit with the amount of text provided.
My second step was sketching what the layout could potentially be. After sketching a few ideas, I took to InDesign to create the ones I felt best went with the artist and his work. This took some trial and error, but I found what I best felt fit the artist's laid-back feel. This is why I chose a sans-serif font. I wanted to carry the colors in the main photo throughout the spread and I wanted to emphasize the artist's heritage because it is such a big part of his inspiration. So, I chose to include those colors in the headline and the questions. This helped to create a feeling of cohesiveness.
The photo showcasing the artist and one of his murals serves as the entry point of this design and draws the reader in to learn more. In a way, this photo acts as a mural and very clearly illustrates the kind of work the artist creates and what the article is going to be about.
The white space surrounding the title helps guide the viewer to this element next and gives it more emphasis. The picture on the right page adds more visual interest to the layout in multiple ways. The photo adds more color to the design, it creates contrast from the other more straight-edged elements, and the text wrap adds interest to the text itself.
